We are a not-for-profit organisation that provides free legal services, including court and tribunal representation, welfare support, advocacy and community education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of family violence and/or sexual assault.

About the role
We are seeking highly motivated and experienced solicitor to join our team as the Senior Solicitor/Deputy Principal Legal Officer based in our Rockhampton office.
You will have demonstrated post admission practice experience in the areas of Family Law, Child Protection and Domestic & Family Violence and victim’s assistance applications.
The Senior Solicitor /DPLO is responsible for overseeing their designated Region’s service delivery arm of the legal practice, as well as its compliance under the direct supervision of the Senior Deputy Principal Legal Officer, and for providing high quality legal representation and advice to clients, in the family law jurisdictions (as and when the case arises).
A core function of the role of the Senior Solicitor/ DPLO is to ensure that the delivery of our legal services through our legal team (including the delivery of our community legal education sessions) is done in a culturally meaningful and trauma informed manner to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who are victims/ survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault, receive quality legal services, representation and advice, whilst fully assisting our clients understand and navigate the relevant legal system, child protection system or victim assistance application process with confidence.
In addition, the Senior Solicitor/DPLO provides a high level of support to the Senior Deputy Principal Legal Officer and our Solicitor Team Leaders.

Skills and experience
A minimum of 4 years PAE, along with a strong understanding, gained from demonstrated post admission practice experience in the areas of Family Law, Child Protection and Domestic & Family Violence.
It is highly desirable that you will also have experience in the supervision or management of legal personnel and legal teams.
A cultural appreciation/understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues impacting upon them is essential or having worked previously with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients would be advantageous.
You may be required to participate in Regional travel which includes some overnight travel. A current Open Drivers Licence and Blue Card is mandatory, and you must be eligible to work in Australia.
